We are a small charity working in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. We provide a family counselling service to help families who have special difficulties in their lives. They have a child, young person or adult family member whose health and well being are affected by a condition that maybe life-limiting, life-threatening or life-long, and the condition impacts on the family.

Families are referred to New Dawn Family Support Service by professionals within Health, Education and Social care, and many approach us directly through recommendation by friends. They come because there is no-where else to go.

The help we provide is mainly in the form of family counselling by trained counsellors working within guidelines of key professional bodies^1,2 We aim to work with the whole family or key members, to help them develop ways of managing the challenges in their lives. Sometimes we support families in their dialogues with education and health professionals or with social workers. What we have been able to do in four years has been achieved by a tiny band of volunteers working within our charity: From each according to their ability

It is vital that we expand our capacity to meet the increasing demand. In order to do that we need more volunteers to work with us.

We need volunteers to help in all aspects of our work.  

• We need volunteers to help in the administration of the charity to ensure that we meet the required standards of the Charity Commission, and develop our communication network.
• We need people to help in IT to develop our systems. This will ensure that we have accurate records of the work we do, and can generate management information to inform our plans and policies.
• We need counsellors to work with families, helping them through the difficulties they face.
• We need people to help build an information base. This enables us to signpost families to other sources of help and other agencies. The information is held in hard-copy form or accessed through links to the internet.
• We need people to help with fundraising and with Publicity and PR.
